Giant Killer by umbrafox Giant Killer by umbrafox
I really feel like I hit a major shift upward in quality with this piece. I'll post details soon.

Photoshop: 14-16 hours

p.s. please full view. You'll miss a lot if you don't, thanks :)

[Edit] I updated the image. I added texture to the stone. I fixed the side the arrow was on (D'oh! I knew I should've checked reference on that again).

I evened out the hands, and I tried to play with the skin a little, but I'm not really sure what you meant on that one Ankaraven.

Thanks very much for the input guys :D

...oh yeah, I also tweaked the left leg a little. I know there's something slightly wrong with it too, but I can't figure it out either :P

The pose that the giant is in makes it seem very prideful, like it's daring the elf to shoot at it.
I also like how you hid its feet within the clouds, making it seem more godly or powerful in a sense.

Giant is really good; the horns, hair etc give him a good 'monster' face on top of a stocky body. Nice armour.

The Elf looks slightly less detailed, but the armour is nicely done.

Despite the title I actually expect the Elf to be swept off that rock by the giant with one sweep of that huge sword. It's a killer giant, not giant killer!

Thanks :) I made the giant kinda stocky so he would seem more massive and um... "giant-ey" :P

Looks much better with the edits. The skin is better now, I think it was just missing a bit more contrast.
I thought about the strange looking leg and I think I know what bothers me about it...when shooting a bow while kneeling you have to tilt the bow or you´ll always hamper yourself. The arrow is on the left side of the bow, and with this kind of bow you usually don´t have an arrow rest and thus the arrow is lying on the hand holding the bow. If the bow is on the right side of the leg you´d have to tilt the bow to the left and thus the arrow would slip down...so to summarize what I´m trying to say: I´d probably put the bow on the other side of the leg and that should alter the overall impression of the pose. :D

Ok, I moved the bow over, happy now? :P Seriously, this is what I get for stopping, um arching when I was like fourteen :P Now I shall say it is perfect and let no man nor gian put it asunder... good lord I'm silly today :O_o:

But the textures on the metal armours and on the bow, as well as the hair of the giant are impressive!

As with most of your work I´d really like to know the story behind it :D
I like the composition, the giant towering over the archer creates an intense atmsphere filled with suspense that is supported further by the lighting.
The hair of the giant is better than any I have seen in your paintings before, it looks really natural and is just about perfect. The face and armour look very good as well, I especially like all those little scratches on the shoulder pieces.
Unfortunately the skin looks a bit washed out and blurry compared to the rest of the giant, it is just missing the precise clearness that all other parts have.
The pose of the elf looks a little awkward, something is bothering about his left leg though I cannot quite put my finger on what it is exactly. The hand holding the bow is about twice as large as the hand drawing the string and being an archer myself I can tell you that the arrow is not going to fly anywhere...it´s on the wrong side of the bow and would probably have fallen down already ;)
The missing texture of the rock was already mentioned in the other comment, I´m looking forward to see it added.
Overall this is a very good painting, with much clearer lines than you usually tend to use.

Wow, great work! The only thing I'd say is the stone surface the archer is sitting on doesn't really look like stone, but aside from that it looks awesome!

D'oh! You're right. I was so excited that I was finally finished with it that I forgoy the surface texture on the stone. I'll get on that, thanks. :)
